Civil Air Patrol (CAP)

Teacher Orientation Program (TOP) Flight

Today we had an opportunity to add on a day to our space academy adventure. The first part of the morning my group spent at the airport. We received a tour of the radar room and control tower. It is amazing to see how everything works together. The second part of the morning I spent flying in a four seat Cesna 172P. We took off from Huntsville and flew to Guntersville which has an island runway. I sat in the back on the way there and then the other teacher and I switched places. We took off again with Maj. Scott as our pilot. After take off he let me fly for quite awhile on the way home. I got to do some bank turns and then we were following a stream down below and basically flew back and went directly by the Saturn 5 Rocket and over the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. It was just another incredible opportunity to be able to have an opportunity to fly the plane!

That afternoon we did a variety of activities dealing with flight and the principles of flight. We also learned about 2 programs sponsored by CAP that I will definitely be accessing in the future. We built rubber band planes, rubber band shuttle, foam gliders and some other projects as well. They had also previously sent each of us a box of their curriculum with additions coming as they are made.

What a great way to wrap up an incredible, unforgettable chance of a lifetime this week!
